62Microsoft Kinect Review: The Future in Computer Gaming and Media Consoles
Computer gaming is often criticized by parents as something that wastes their kids’ time. Teachers and learning experts say that these activities are more harmful than beneficial when it comes to the academic performance of a child. Furthermore, health experts say that computer gaming promotes obesity as much as television viewing because all a child does is sit in front of a monitor and let the hands do all the work. But a few years ago, Sony Playstation introduced the Dance Pad which allows players to play dance games through a gaming console. A few years after came the now famous Nintendo Wii wherein people can play by using a remote controller and hand movements. This was the best in terms of computer gaming that integrates physical movements. Players can play a variety of sports with the use of it in addition to other famous games that lets you control your character or character’s movement with the movement of a person’s hand. However, last November, Kinect for Xbox 360 was launched in North America, Singapore, UK, Japan and in other countries. This ends the glory days of the Nintendo Wii.
Why Kinect is Better
Kinect allows you to play and control it without using ANY hand-held device. With the Kinect console and your body, you can play a host of games and do a lot more. It can recognize gestures, body movements, faces, and voice commands so it really is a breath of fresh air from the Nintendo Wii which is only based on the motion of its hand-held remote. To make it better, Kinect allows you to watch sports via ESPN on Xbox 360, listen to music via Last.fm, watch movies or tv shows with Zune on Xbox 360 and have online face to face chat with friends and family all around the world with Video Kinect. All these can be done without pressing any buttons - just a wave of the hand or a voice command while sitting comfortably on your couch will do.
Growing Number of Kinect Games
As if the moment, there are only 17 Kinect games available but it can already accommodate all age groups. Games range from RPG’s like the videogame adaptation of the world-wide phenomenon Harry Potter, the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and star wars Kinect. There are kiddie games like Kinectimals wherein the player must raise a pet and go on Kinect adventures. Furthermore, there are lots of games that are dance and fitness oriented like Dance Masters and Active 2. In addition, there are Kinect sports games which allow you to play soccer, boxing and even car-racing. With these kinds of games, imagine all the stunts that you will have to make just to make it to the next level!

PC Connectivity
Microsoft, the maker of Xbox Kinect revealed that in their upcoming operating system (allegedly named Windows 8) that will be released two to three years from now, this console will be compatible. Just imagine what new things you can do with your PC with the Xbox 360 Kinect in your arsenal of computer gadgets. Your PC might be able to handle face recognition, voice commands, and gesture recognition as well. It will be like those sci-fi movies wherein the computer systems are very much advanced.
The Future of Microsoft Kinect
With this technology made available for the public, whole new possibilities are opened. This is just the beginning. The Kinect Xbox isn’t perfect yet with a few minor problems cited by other critics like the large space it requires and some problems with tracking. The computer gaming industry is improving with the progress of the Digital age. More and more parents, teachers, learning and health experts start to rethink the role of computer gaming because they themselves are starting to use it as well.
